Tallano Technologies wins first prize at the Seoul Global Challenge 2020–21

Tallano Technologie, a French start-up founded by Christophe Rocca-Serra to protect the health of metropolitan residents from fine brake particles, was awarded the first prize in the prestigious Seoul Global Challenge on Thursday, December 16, 2021.
By inviting global innovators and highlighting the most cutting-edge technological solutions for the city of tomorrow, the Seoul Global Challenge 2021, hosted by the Seoul Metropolitan Government, awarded Tallano Technologie and its TAMIC© solution. Tallano Technologie already works with public transport companies such as the SNCF and the Shanghai subway.
A public health issue
Tallano Technologie responds to a major public health issue. Thanks to an innovative solution for capturing at source the fine particles generated by the braking of vehicles (thermal and electric cars, buses, trains, metros), the start-up aims to help the automobile industry and public transport operators to combat fine particle emissions.
A first experiment by the City of Paris had been conducted in 2018 with this novel technology developed by the start-up, in collaboration: vehicles Renault Zoé had been equipped with a device to recover particles from the abrasion of brake pads. Exposure to fine particles (PM10 and PM2.5) has been recognized as the 7th leading risk factor for death worldwide: it can cause acute respiratory disorders, lung cancer, as well as chronic cardiovascular diseases. In 2016, 4.2 million people died prematurely worldwide according to an OECD report published in 2021.
A changing European context
This recognition by the South Korean authorities comes in a voluntarist context at the European level. As part of the Green Deal, the European Commission has announced a proposal for stricter air pollutant emission standards for vehicles (Euro 7) to accelerate the transition to clean, zero-emission vehicles. Through this revision, and based on recent public health and environmental studies, the European Commission is preparing the introduction of 1OCDE, “Non-exhaust Particulatre Emissions from Road Transport », December, 2020 stricter emission ceilings for regulated pollutants and the setting of limits for emissions from brakes.
The TAMIC© solution, an innovative patented solution awarded at the Seoul Global Challenges
The TAMIC® system is a universal solution adapted to railways, where concentrations in confined areas are 10 times higher than those found outdoors. It reduces fine and ultrafine particle emissions by up to 90%. The TAMIC® technology, successfully tested by various car manufacturers, is adaptable to cars, trucks, buses and rail transport. In the rail sector, a full-scale experiment is underway with the SNCF (RER line C). “Winning the first prize at the Seoul Global Challenge is a key international step for a French startup like Tallano Technologie, which focuses on improving air quality by capturing at source the fine particles generated by the braking of vehicles. About Seoul Global Challenge
The Seoul Global Challenge 2021, hosted by the Seoul Metropolitan Government and organized by the Seoul Business Agency (SBA) to find innovative solutions to urban problems by inviting global innovators, culminated in the award ceremony. This second edition of the Seoul Global Challenge was dedicated to selecting innovators with new ideas for improving air quality in the Seoul subway and supporting the development of test products. It brought together 106 companies from all regions of the world, including the United States, France, Japan and Korea.
The challenge finalists’ solutions were tested for the Seoul Metro. Kim Seong-Min, General Manager of SBA’s Innovation Growth Division said, “The Challenge will be another step towards a better environment for Seoul’s citizens through the reduction of fine particle levels in the city’s subway system, and we at SBA will continue to take the lead in solving the urban problems facing Seoul by organizing the Seoul Global Challenge around various issues.”
